There’s so much that life teaches us through the years. Some things we learn by observing others and some things we have to learn the hard way by going through the experience and reaping the consequences. God would rather have us learn by being taught His way and seeing the results of doing things God’s way. One of those things is watching those who have a servant’s heart and seeing for ourselves the results of having these kinds of people around you whether it be at Church, on our jobs, in our communities, or elsewhere. I know for me personally, being in a position of Pastor, having worked practically all of my teenage and adult life, having served 11 yrs. in the military, I’ve watched how one mindset of serving as opposed to a mindset of selfishness, makes a tremendous difference on how any group of people within those Churches, workplaces, communities, etc., will end up. Selfishness is just a destructive mindset. It only takes and does not give back. Notice something that John Maxwell has said in his book “Developing The Leader Within You,” that in most Churches there’s what he calls the 80-20 rule, and that is that 20 percent of the people do most of the work in that Church. That also goes for any group of people. Of course, that will vary from group to group, but in my personal experience, that seems to be the case. It’s rare that you have a group of people where everyone is giving 100%, and in those cases where they are, that’s where you see the most productivity. That’s where I say the servant’s spirit is the most productive mindset, especially when it is out of a personal relationship with God. It gives out of a love for God and mankind. I love Dr. Martin Luther King’s definition of agape love. Dr. King says it’s the redemptive, goodwill, creative love toward all people. Those who have a servant’s heart are not selfish people, but people who see serving in the kingdom as a birth out of their own personal vertical relationship with their God which overflows to our horizontal relationship with our fellow man. Then and only then can one truly have a servant’s heart as taught by our Lord.
