Matthew 5:13-16 (KJV) 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Notice that Jesus did not say that the Church is the way by which men must be saved. Jesus is the only name under Heaven by which men must be saved. He did not say if you confess with your mouth the Church, but if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in you heart that God raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. God never commanded the Church to save anybody. Of course we want men to be saved, but only God can save men. What He commanded the Church to do is be the salt of the earth, that city on a hill, and the light of the world. To be salt is to use our influence to encourage others to Christ and be that example before them so that they see God in us. To be the light is to be living epistles, living examples of what and how a Christian ought to live. A city on a hill is letting the world see your example in Christ, by your actions. The Church is commissioned to go into the world and preach the gospel, Matt. 28:18-20; to be a witness, Acts 1:8; and to be a light, Matt. 5:13-16. We can’t save anybody but like many of those who we were influenced by, we can be light to this generation. Ours is to be an influence, nudging men to Christ as they see our example and His goodness. Light in darkness leads people to salvation. We can’t save anyone, but we can lead them to the One who can.
