Love can be known only from the actions it prompts. God’s love is seen in the gift of His Son which was the apex of His love. This is not a shallow love or a love based on affection. It’s not in consequence of any excellence of those it’s directed to, but it’s deliberate of the divine will of God. It’s the nature of our heavenly Father. His love was perfectly expressed in our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. The Christian’s love is the fruit of the human spirit as a result of the indwelling Holy Spirit in every born again Believer. That love is first and foremost to our God expressed in unreserved obedience to His commandments. Self-will or self-pleasing has no place in agape. Christian love, whether exercised toward the brethren, or toward men in general, does not flow out of the emotions, does not necessarily run with natural tendencies, is not always directed to just those whom we may like. Love seeks the welfare of all. It works no ill to anyone. Love seeks the opportunity to do good to all men and especially towards them that are of the household of the faith. In respect of agape as used of God, it expresses the deep and constant love and interest of a perfect God towards mankind producing and fostering a reverential love in them towards the Giver, and a practical love towards those who are partakers of the same, and a desire to help others to seek the Giver. This love is the DNA of every child of God and is the most powerful force on earth. “Beloved, let us love one another, love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God,” 1 Jn. 4:7 (KJV). Love transforms the lives of its recipients for the better. It’s never destructive but encourages, edifies and builds up. The absence of love exposes the greatest of evil and destruction. An atmosphere of love fosters a caring concern for the best to all and not just to self or a select few. Love cares for others as it does for self. This is the golden rule of scripture, Matt. 7:12. “And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity,” 1 Cor. 13:13 (KJV).
