As we wrapped up our series on “Remaining Faithful in a Faithless Generation” we focused on the calling of the Church being the light of the world, the city on a hill, the salt of the earth. The Church’s calling is the greatest calling since souls are in the balance, therefore our remaining faithful in a faithless generation is detrimental to the spiritual wellbeing of loved ones, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. Therefore I think that it’s appropriate to introduce our next series on the heels of the last because in order that the Church be able to fulfill it’s calling it must have an understanding of serving and how serving in the kingdom is absolutely necessary if the Church is to be effective in it’s calling. When it comes to the calling of the Church the Lord, on several occasions, taught that the greatest among us are servants and that, in fact, He came to serve. Serving is central to the calling of the Church being fulfilled and without those with a heart to serve there is no ministry. And then, when we do serve, the Bible says to do it with fervency. Romans 12:11 (KJV): “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” Throughout the Word of God we witness the admonition of the Lord to give priority to this concept of serving in the kingdom . Luke 22:24-27 (KJV) “And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.” In my personal opinion, the greatest fulfillment for the Believer is to serve in the kingdom of God all to His glory. Jesus made it clear that He came to serve, not for position, or a title, or to be seen of men, but at the pleasure of the Father, to be a vessel in the plans and purposes of God, His example for the Church today.
