As we celebrate the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to society, and as we prepare to celebrate Black History month, my Sunday series titled “Out of His Wisdom, Our Uniqueness,” dives deep into the contributions of the descendants of Ham, which are people of color, to explore what God’s Word has to say about the ancient world and its inhabitants. It soon becomes apparent to the reader that the descendants of Ham made great contributions to mankind. They were technologically advanced. They were the architectures of the Ethiopian and Egyptian pyramids. Other accomplishments of the Hamite descendants were the invention of paper; Ceramics industry; Mathematics; Engineering; Beginnings of architecture; Sailing boats; Domestication of animals; Running water; Pulleys; Plans and maps; Clocks and calendars (365); Ironmaking; Pipe organ; Taming the horse; Glass; Gears; Advanced embalming; and Food preservation. These are only a few of the contributions of Black people in the Bible. There are many many more. Without these contributions, life would not be as it is today. All humanity owes a debt of gratitude to the ancient Hamites. This does not take away accomplishments from other descendants of Noah but on the other hand, it does not minimize the accomplishments of the Negro either. There’s good and evil in all people, regardless of their heritage. Human nature apart from God is a trainwreck going somewhere to happen. If anything, the study of race in the Bible teaches one sure thing, that God is not a respecter of persons. All may have access to Him through faith regardless of race, sex, ethnicity, or social status. Therefore, as we get into the celebration of what people of color suffered in order to win the basic rights of humanity, just remember that God’s Word is the report that we want to believe and everything else must be placed up against the Word to see if it measures up to the truth and if it does not then we reject it for the truth, period!
