In today’s message we solicit the help of Lk. 16:19-31 to encourage the people of God in our generation to be diligent in our faith walk. As Christians we can sometimes think that just because we’re already saved and heaven bound, we need not be concerned with the destiny of others who are lost, but that’s as far from the truth as light is from darkness. The account of the rich man and Lazarus in this story focuses more on what happened after their deaths more so than their lives but I want to flip the script and spend more time on their living than after their deaths because it was what they had done before their deaths that determined their destinies after their deaths. As a people of the eternal, we should be concerned about what happens in eternity than what happens in the temporal since understanding the eternal will influence how we live in the temporal. In Lk. 16:19-21 (KJV) the Bible reads: Lk 16:19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: Lk 16:20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, Lk 16:21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The rich man didn’t see what was coming and obviously by his priorities, he wasn’t mindful of things eternal. If he had, then he would not have ended up where he did. On the other hand, Lazarus did not have much in this life, yet he was rich spiritually. This too was obvious, or he would not have ended up in paradise. We live in this life, some of us have been blessed to have had great shoulders to have stood upon and gained a great Christian heritage. Others though, have not been so blessed, and like the rich man, stumbles in the dark without the light of the gospel of Christ. That’s where we, the people of God, come in. Though life has it uncertainties, we have the truth. That truth will guide us in this life and in the life to come. While on this side of glory we have the opportunity to encourage those like the rich man, at least to be an instrument in His hands that through us God might be able to save some.
