2 Timothy 2:3-4 (KJV): 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. Christians are compared to military soldiers, a powerful analogy that helps the Believer understand the warfare in which he or she is in. We’re in a spiritual warfare and there are similarities that can be drawn between a soldier in the military and Christians in the good fight of faith. Soldiers train for war, to fight, combat the enemy, and to defend their country. They’re prepared to die if necessary to protect the homeland, but they would rather make their enemy die for theirs. A soldier must know the devices of his enemy, or he can wind up a casualty himself. He must be in top physical shape and on top of his A-game. He takes his training seriously because he relies on his training to keep him alive. He can’t afford to be slack when it comes to his training because one mistake can cost him his life and the life of those in his squad or platoon. He must be sharp. He must be mindful of his influence on younger soldiers. The younger soldiers must see the example of how a real soldier carries himself. It wasn’t until I actually saw with my own eyes mature Christians actually practicing what they preached that it dawned on me that this faith walk was more than just going to worship services on Sunday morning, but it’s who I am, my life, my actions, my talk, my walk, in Him I live, and move, and have my being. Now I know the real spiritual warfare that we as Christians are in every day of the week, 24-7’s, 365 days a year, and the devil doesn’t go on vacation, and neither does God. It’s up to us whether we will be good soldiers in the kingdom of light.
