Hurricane Michael reminds us once again of the fragility of life. So much destruction from nature that we’ve witnessed much too often these past several years. Yet even in the midst of tragedy we discover there are still good people in the world today. During preparations for what might come our way with Hurricane Michael my neighborhood came together to help one another prepare for the storm while praying for the best outcome. I was touched by the outpouring of help from neighbors, city officials including the city engineer, the Brunswick fire dept., the public works dept. delivered sand and sandbags, Shantia Lewis of the city of Brunswick helped coordinate as well as fill sandbags, two of my brothers, Vince and Terry, spent the entire evening helping fill sandbags and help deliver them to College Pk. residents who were not able to fill sandbags for themselves. There were people coming and getting sandbags from other areas of the Brunswick community. No one was concerned with who was democrat or republican, whether you were Baptist or Pentecostal, whether you were gay or straight, or whether you were black or white. The community came together in a rare showing of love and compassion for one another and helped in whatever capacity they could. There were Vietnam vets, 20 yr. vets, 11 yr. vets all having conversations about their military experiences while others got sandbags for their homes and the homes of their loved ones. We had several people not from the College Pk. sub-division who asked if they could get some sandbags for their homes and we didn’t turn them away but anyone who asked for help got help. But why does it take a storm to bring the best out of people? I do believe that God allows storms that we may realize our true selves. Keep the Vision Alive!
