“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance,” Acts 2:4 (KJV). The gift of tongues is a powerful weapon in our spiritual arsenal but primarily the gift is a devotional gift for our private worship unto the Lord in prayer, praise, and thanksgiving . “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries,” 1 Cor. 14:2 (KJV). But there’s so much more to the gift of speaking in tongues. It is the doorway to the other spiritual gifts. Praying in tongues stimulates our faith . “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,” Jude 20 (KJV). Praying in tongues edifies our spirit man. “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church, 1 Cor. 14:4 (KJV). In Isa. 28:11, 12 (KJV) is revealed another awesome dynamic concerning this gift and it is that there’s a spiritual refreshing when praying in tongues. “For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.” Compare with 1 Cor. 14:21 (KJV): “In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.” Praying in tongues reminds us of the Holy Spirit’s Presence. When we pray in the Spirit or in tongues, our spirits pray by the Holy Spirit within us, 1 Cor. 14:14 (KJV): “For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.” But my spirit man is edified, 1 Cor. 14:4. Praying in tongues helps us in prayer. We can pray for the unknown, Rom. 8:26 (KJV): “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities; for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” Another blessing of the gift of tongues is we can give thanks unto God in our heavenly language. “Otherwise, if you bless and render thanks with [your] spirit [thoroughly aroused by the Holy Spirit], how can anyone in the position of an outsider or he who is not gifted with [interpreting of unknown] tongues, say the Amen to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?” 1 Cor. 14:16 (Amplified Bible).
