The Bible addresses the subject of race in Acts 17:26 (KJV): “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.” There were challenges even among the early Church when God sent Peter to Cornelius’ house to preach the gospel to the gentiles. At first Peter was reluctant to go because he believed, as did many Jews of that day, that the gentile nations were unclean, Acts 10. After preaching to those of Cornelius’ house the message of Jesus Christ and seeing that God filled them just like He had filled the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, Peter said in Acts 10:47 (KJV): “Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?” But, this thing became a major issue in the Church, Acts 11:1-3 (KJV): “And the apostles and brethren that were in Judea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God. And when Peter was come up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him, Saying, Thou wentest in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.” Peter then rehearsed in their ears how God had showed him in a vision all manner of four-footed beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air and saying to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. But Peter said, Not so Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common, Acts 10:12-15 (KJV). Then Peter revealed to those Jews what the meaning of the vision was in Acts 11:15-17 (KJV): “And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, what was I, that I could withstand God?” Would to God that men would believe as Peter and the Jews did of that day that “What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common,” Acts 10:15 (KJV).
