Today’s message finds the prophet Samuel at the father of David’s home to anoint a king over Israel in the place of king Saul who was rejected for disobeying God. But when the sons of Jesse were called they didn’t even consider David until Samuel asked if Jesse had any other sons. Samuel thought surely that Eliab would be the chosen one to be anointed king over Israel but the Lord replied to Samuel in 1 Sam. 16:7 (KJV): “But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” If it had been up to his own father and brothers David would have been overlooked because they only saw the youngest brother who certainly was not as prepared to be king as they were. But on another occasion, David showed more courage than all of his brothers when Goliath challenged the armies of Israel, 1 Sam. 17:4-11. David overheard the challenge of Goliath and asked what was to be given to the man that killed Goliath and his oldest brother Eliab rebuked him, 1 Sam. 17:28. But David persisted in the presence of King Saul in 1 Sam. 17:32 (KJV): “And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” Everybody else saw youth in David. Even King Saul at first was discouraging David from fighting Goliath. But David shared with king Saul the awesome story of how God gave him the victory over a lion and a bear that had taken a lamb out of the flock, 1 Sam. 17:34-37. The difference between David and his siblings was that David did not trust in his own strength, but in his God, 1 Sam. 17:45 (KJV): “Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.” When all that others could see was a young inexperienced boy, God saw a king.
