Today’s Pastor’s Pen highlights Uriah the Hittite who many Christians know by David’s indiscretion with his wife Bathsheba. That may be mostly what many remember about Uriah the Hittite but he was much more than the husband of Bathsheba. He was a noble, honorable, dedicated, patriotic, and committed soldier under King David’s leadership. When Bathsheba became pregnant from David while Uriah was out fighting his wars, David attempted to provide an opportunity for it to look like the pregnancy was from Uriah by getting his general Joab to bring Uriah home to be with his wife, but Uriah was much nobler than David, at the time, for the Scriptures reveal that Uriah would not go down to his own house and have pleasure with his wife while his comrades and his superiors fought in the fields of battle, 2 Sam. 11:10-13 (KJV): 10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not from thy journey? why then didst thou not go down unto thine house? 11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. 12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. 13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house. The Hittites traced their roots to Ham’s grandson Heth, Gen. 10:15. Actually, Bathsheba was of Hamitic descent as well. Bathsheba means daughter of Sheba, which perhaps reflects her tribal roots. In Gen. 10:7, Sheba is listed in Ham’s family. King Solomon is also the son of David from Bathsheba, a woman of Hamitic descent. Of course, we know that Bathsheba was married to Uriah the Hittite, both of Hamitic descent.
